Premenstrual Syndrome is characterized by physiological and psychological changes in the body before or during each menstrual period and is severe enough to disturb a woman’s routine life. According to Ayurveda concept and symptoms can be perceived on the basis of tridosha theory. Aartava or Menstruation is a phenomenon, which is controlled and governed by Vata and specifically the Apana Vayu, the sub type of the Vata Dosha.

Causes:

According to Ayurveda main cause of menstrual problems are imbalances of Vata Dosha.

  • Toxins accumulating in tissues and blocking circulation.
  • Poor nutrition.
  • Poor digestion.
  • Imbalance of the nervous system
  • Accumulation of physical and mental stress.
  • Lowering of natural resistance and immunity
  • Disruption of natural biological rhythms
Symptoms:

Premenstrual syndrome inflicts various symptoms, but the most common ones are the following:

  • A sudden rash of acne break out in the face
  • Breast swelling
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling weak and tired with no reason at all
  • Headaches, backaches, stomachaches, and other body pains
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Irritability or abrupt mood changes
  • Loss of concentration
  • Unexplained anxiety
Treatment:

For balance of vata Dosha externally, Abhayang with medicated oil and fomentation with herbal decoctions give excellent results. In severe cases, medicated oil enema (anuvasana basti) is very beneficial (e.g.sesame oil and dashamoola kwatha). Second one is shriodhara which is beneficial for psychological symptoms like mood swing, depression,anxiety etc. Some Ayurvedic medicines also give excellent result in premenstrual syndrome.
